Caring for vintage drums: cleaning, storage, and hardware

A vintage drum is an investment — both financially and musically. With proper care, a drum built in the 1960s will still sound remarkable fifty years from now. Neglect it and the consequences range from cosmetic (tarnished hardware, faded wraps) to structural (warped shells, cracked hoops). This guide covers the essential maintenance tasks any vintage drum owner should know.

Head replacement

Drumheads are consumables. Even if a vintage drum has never been heavily played, old heads lose their tension memory, become brittle, and contribute little to the drum's sound. Replacing heads is often the single most effective improvement you can make to a vintage instrument.

Sizing. Measure the internal diameter of the shell, not the external dimension. Most vintage kits use standard sizes that match modern head production: 8", 10", 12", 13", 14", 16", 18", 20", 22". Occasionally an older drum will use a non-standard size (some 1950s kits use 11" or 15") — in these cases specialist suppliers can make heads to measure.

Seating the head. When fitting a new head, apply even pressure across the hoop in a star pattern — tighten each lug a half-turn, then move to the opposite side, working around the drum. Never crank one lug fully before moving on; this pulls the hoop unevenly and can warp it. After the head is seated, let it rest under light tension for 24 hours before tuning to pitch.

Head choice. For vintage drums, a single-ply coated head (Remo Ambassador Coated, Evans G1 Coated, or equivalent) generally complements the shell's natural resonance better than heavy two-ply heads, which dampen overtones that vintage shells produce naturally. The resonant (bottom) head should usually be a thinner single-ply clear head unless you are specifically looking for a dry, dead sound.

Lug lubrication

Tension rods thread into lug casings and should turn smoothly. On vintage drums, these threads are often dry, rusted, or filled with debris from decades of storage. A stiff tension rod risks shearing inside the casing — a difficult and expensive repair.

Before tuning any vintage drum for the first time, back out each tension rod completely. Inspect the thread on the rod and the inside of the lug casing. If there is rust or grit, clean the rod thread with a small brass brush and wipe the casing clean with a cotton swab. Apply a tiny amount of petroleum jelly or dedicated lug lubricant to the thread before reinstalling. Do not use WD-40 as a lubricant — it is a water displacer, not a long-term lubricant, and it attracts dust.

Lug casings themselves can work loose over time as the screws into the shell back out. Check each lug for stability. A slightly loose lug creates rattles and can eventually damage the shell around the mounting holes. Tighten the shell screws carefully — over-tightening cracks wood around the holes.

Shell cleaning

Wooden shells require careful handling. The general rule is: mild and damp, never wet.

Wrapped shells (plastic wrap, sparkle wrap) can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap solution. Avoid soaking the seam where the wrap joins, as water that penetrates the seam can cause the wrap to lift. Never use solvent-based cleaners (acetone, white spirit, or most multi-surface sprays) on wrapped shells — they attack the adhesive and can permanently lift the wrap or dull its surface.

Lacquered wood shells respond well to guitar polish or a dedicated drum polish. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and buff off. Avoid silicone-based polishes if you ever intend to refinish the shell — silicone contaminates wood and prevents finish adhesion.

Unfinished interior surfaces should be left dry. Do not apply any oil or polish to the interior of a shell — it changes the acoustic properties and can cause problems if the shell ever needs repair.

Hardware anti-corrosion

Chrome-plated steel hardware is vulnerable to pitting if stored in damp conditions. Prevention is much easier than cure.

After a session or before storage, wipe down all hardware (hoops, lugs, tension rods, stands) with a dry cloth. A light wipe with a slightly oil- dampened cloth — mineral oil or a proprietary metal protectant — provides a barrier against atmospheric moisture. Do not leave hardware in direct contact with leather cases or certain foam types that off-gas acidic compounds.

If hardware has developed surface rust, start with the gentlest possible intervention: a chrome polish (Autosol or similar) on a soft cloth. For deeper pitting, fine wire wool (0000 grade, not coarser) can remove corrosion without scratching the chrome, but work carefully and sparingly. Once pitting has broken through the chrome plating to the base metal, professional re-plating is the only way to restore appearance — cosmetically acceptable DIY solutions do not exist for deeply pitted chrome.

Humidity and storage

Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture with changes in ambient humidity. Significant swings in humidity cause shells to expand and contract, which over time can loosen internal reinforcement rings, open up seams, and crack lacquer finishes.

Aim to store drums in an environment between 45% and 55% relative humidity. A hygrometer (widely available cheaply) takes the guesswork out of monitoring your storage space. In very dry environments (particularly rooms with central heating), a small room humidifier pays for itself quickly in avoided repairs. In damp environments, a dehumidifier and adequate ventilation protect against the mould growth that attacks drum wrap adhesive and drum heads alike.

Flight cases versus gig bags. Rigid flight cases or ATA cases offer the best protection for storage and transport. They buffer temperature and humidity changes, protect against physical impact, and — for genuinely valuable vintage pieces — the peace of mind alone is worth the investment. Soft gig bags are convenient for gigging but provide no protection against humidity or significant impact. If a valuable vintage drum must live in a gig bag, at minimum wrap the shell in a cotton pillowcase to give it a layer of moisture buffering.

Do not store drums in attics or garages without climate control. Temperature extremes alone (not just humidity) can damage shells and hardware. A cool, dry, stable indoor environment is the ideal — a spare bedroom beats a garage every time.

When to seek professional help

Some repairs are beyond the scope of home maintenance: re-wrapping a shell with a badly lifted wrap, re-cutting a bearing edge that has been damaged or incorrectly altered, re-plating hardware, or repairing a cracked shell. These tasks require specific tools and experience, and a poor repair reduces value more than leaving the original flaw in place. If in doubt, ask a specialist drum technician — many instrument repairers and luthiers will advise you honestly on whether a repair is worthwhile before you commit to the cost.
